Cabo Polonio is a modest off-grid beach village on Uruguay's eastern Atlantic coast, reachable only by walking through sand dunes or by 4×4 from the main highway. The cape hosts Uruguay's largest sea lion colony, visible from the shore or from the lighthouse built in 1881 and declared a historic monument in 1976. The area has no mains electricity or running water, and takes its name from the captain of a ship wrecked here in 1753.
