Canelli
Asti · Italy
Canelli, on a bend of the river Belbo in Piedmont's Alto Monferrato, is widely regarded as the birthplace of Italian sparkling wine: the Moscato grape used to produce Asti Spumante is still commonly called Muscat Canelli, and in 2014 the town and its wine were jointly declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vineyards cover the surrounding hills, and the broader Langhe-Roero and Monferrato landscape adds further UNESCO-listed wine country within easy reach.
