One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Italy, Canosa di Puglia is considered the principal archaeological centre of Apulia, with a compact centre holding many historic churches and a good concentration of cafés and restaurants. The Roman Canusium sits near the Ofanto River, close to where Roman forces regrouped after the Battle of Cannae, and holds the tomb of Bohemund I of Antioch. The town stands on the northwestern edge of the Murgia plateau, with views stretching toward Mount Vulture and the Adriatic coast.
