Castres

Castres, a town in southern France's Tarn department, is the birthplace of socialist leader Jean Jaurès and home to the Goya Museum, one of France's leading collections of Spanish painting. The 17th-century town hall occupies a former bishop's palace designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart — architect of Versailles — with gardens laid out by André Le Nôtre, and the old weavers' and tanners' houses lining the River Agout are the town's most photographed image. The centre holds several historic churches, including the listed Cathédrale Saint-Benoît.
