Charolles gave its name to the Charolais breed of cattle and is also known for its faïence pottery — a small Burgundian town in Saône-et-Loire where two rivers meet and branch into canals throughout the centre, earning it the local nickname "Venice of the Charolais." The capital of the County of Charolais in the 13th century, it passed through the hands of the Dukes of Burgundy and later the Habsburgs before joining the French royal domain in the 18th century.
