Cinfaes

Portugal

A tiny town on the southern bank of the Douro in northern Portugal, Cinfães has a central core with cafés and restaurants and sits directly on the river. The surrounding territory is rural and hilly, rising toward the Montemuro mountain range. The municipality's history is tied to the Knights Templar, who held fortresses here, and to the childhood of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, and his guardian Egas Moniz. Romanesque churches, including the Igreja de São Cristóvão de Nogueira, are among the area's built heritage.
