Conques
Aveyron · France
This tiny village in Aveyron whose Romanesque abbey church and its treasury — including a gold statue of Sainte Foy — earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1998, Conques has been a major stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route (Via Podiensis) since the Middle Ages. The abbey's porch sculptures are particularly noted. The village is listed among Les plus beaux villages de France, sits above the gorges of the Dourdou river, and has a pocket-sized but real café and restaurant scene for its size.
