Corte
Haute-Corse · France
Corte served as the capital of independent Corsica under Pascal Paoli between 1755 and 1769, and the town still carries that history at its centre — the citadel now houses the Musée de la Corse, opened in 1997. Sitting in a central position on the island, with a café scene substantial for its size and mountains close by, it is also home to the University of Corsica-Pascal-Paoli, which reopened in 1981 and gives the compact town a lively, year-round character.
