The main city of Chilean Patagonia's Aysén Region, Coyhaique sits at the confluence of the Simpson and Coyhaique rivers, ringed by dramatic mountain scenery and serving as the primary gateway to the Carretera Austral. Founded in 1929 to support colonisation of this remote Andean territory, it has a walkable centre with a solid food-and-drink scene. Balmaceda Airport connects it to the rest of Chile, and the former facilities of the Sociedad Industrial de Aysén, active here since 1906, are protected as a National Historic Monument.
