Cumaná
Venezuela
Widely regarded as the oldest continuously-inhabited city of Spanish foundation in South America, Cumaná sits at the mouth of the Manzanares River on Venezuela's Caribbean coast, close to the beaches of Mochima National Park. The city was birthplace to Antonio José de Sucre, the independence general who served as president of both Bolivia and Peru, as well as the poets Andrés Eloy Blanco and José Antonio Ramos Sucre. Alexander von Humboldt and other 18th-century scientists conducted research here.
