Dabnitsa

This village in the Rhodope Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria, Dabnitsa sits beside the Mesta river with mountain terrain close by and UNESCO-listed sites in the wider region. The area has a long history of settlement, with Thracian, Roman, and medieval Bulgarian traces, and the remains of a fortress known as St. Archangel survive about a kilometre north of the village. Most residents are Pomak — Slavic-speaking Muslims — giving the community a distinct cultural character.
