Daugavpils

Latvia's second-largest city, Daugavpils sits on both banks of the Daugava River in the country's southeast, with a walkable centre well supplied with cafés and restaurants. First mentioned in historical sources in 1275 and granted city rights in 1582, it served as the capital of Polish Livonia under the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth before passing to the Russian Empire in 1772. Today it remains a major railway junction and industrial centre, and its predominantly Russian-speaking population reflects a history of shifting borders and administrations.
