Dezful
Iran
A city on the Dez River in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains, Dezful has a history reaching back through the Sassanid, Achaemenid, and Elamite eras, with settlement in the surrounding area spanning roughly five thousand years. The largest city in northern Khuzestan, it draws visitors particularly around Nowruz, when its landscape turns green after winter rains. During the Iran-Iraq War it was repeatedly struck by Iraqi missiles, earning the epithet "City of Resistance." Several UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
