Sitting on the eastern shore of the Paraná River in Entre Ríos province, Diamante offers direct access to the river and views across the Paraná Delta. Founded in 1836 and originally called Punta Gorda, the town was renamed in 1852 by General Justo José de Urquiza as his army passed through before the Battle of Caseros. In 1853, the U.S. Rio de la Plata Expedition used Diamante as a base to survey the river and its delta for the Smithsonian Institution.
