A small town on the right bank of the Lot river in south-western France's Lot-et-Garonne department, Fumel sits at the centre of a cluster of communes in a region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. The town was pillaged in 1438 during the Hundred Years' War by Rodrigo de Villandrando, and is today twinned with Uttoxeter in the United Kingdom.
