Gilgit
Pakistan
Gilgit serves as the main hub for trekking and mountaineering expeditions into the Karakoram range, sitting near the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan. The city lies at a major junction on the Karakoram Highway, with road connections to China and several Pakistani cities, and climbers heading for peaks including Rakaposhi pass through here. Once a significant stop on the ancient Silk Road and an important centre for Buddhism, it is today the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan.
