Grumo Appula
Bari · Italy
Small Apulian town in the Alta Murgia National Park, Grumo Appula sits in olive-grove and vineyard country inland from Bari, with an unusual concentration of churches for its size. Holy Week processions here include a Good Friday parade of twelve papier-mâché mystery statues made between the late 1700s and early 1900s, and a sung dirge in the local Grumese dialect. The summer Madonna di Mellitto festival draws a horse-drawn procession of flower-cart floats through the town streets.
