Guanajay
Cuba
Founded in 1650, Guanajay is one of western Cuba's oldest towns and was among the most prosperous settlements in the Vueltabajo region by the 19th century. It is the birthplace of Carlos Baliño, a founder of both José Martí's Cuban Revolutionary Party and Cuba's first Communist Party. The town sits among hills in Artemisa Province, roughly an hour's drive southwest of Havana, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
