Hisardzik
Serbia
This modest village in the mountains of Serbia's Zlatibor district, Hisardzik takes its name from the Turkish word for fortress — a reference to the medieval stronghold of Milesevac that rises above it. The village grew from the settlement that developed below that fortification, and holds a mosque containing a Quran estimated to be four centuries old. During World War II it served as a base for Sandzak Muslim militia forces.
