İlisu
Azerbaijan
A village on the Kürmük River in Azerbaijan's Qax district, İlisu sits on a river terrace ringed by the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus range. Settled as a community in the 13th century, it was historically the centre of the İlisu Sultanate for close to three centuries. The area's rare flora and fauna prompted the Azerbaijani government to establish the İlisu State Nature Reserve in 1987, later expanded in 2003.
