A compact Latvian town on the left bank of the Daugava River, Jaunjelgava sits in the Selonia region southeast of Riga. It has a long civic history, receiving market-town rights in 1590 and full town rights in 1647. The town is also known in Latvian as "New Jelgava" and in German as Friedrichstadt, reflecting its layered heritage.
