A port city on the Tonlé Sap River in central Cambodia, Kampong Chhnang was long defined by its floating fishing villages, which rose and fell with the monsoon seasons — the last of these was dismantled in 2022. The city sits within reach of Phnom Kong Rei to the north and is connected to Phnom Penh by road and rail, with the surrounding region centred on rice production.
