On the right bank of the Daugava River where the Pērse flows into it, Koknese is a pocket-sized Latvian town in the Vidzeme region with scenic river views and a medieval castle that was once one of the strongest fortresses in Livonia. First recorded in 1205 under the name Kukenoys, the town held city rights and Hanseatic membership from 1277 until the late 17th century, a status formally restored in 2021.
