Coastal town in southeastern Finland whose city centre occupies its own island — Kotkansaari — at the mouth of the Kymi River, Kotka sits on the Gulf of Finland with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants and scenic water views in most directions. A major port with a culturally diverse population, it lies on the E18 route connecting Helsinki to St. Petersburg, and the wider region has several UNESCO World Heritage sites nearby.
