Loviisa

Helsinki-Uusimaa · Finland

Founded in 1745 as a border fortress against Russia, Loviisa is a compact bilingual town on Finland's southern coast, east of Helsinki, where much of the original fortification survives. The town sits amid an archipelago landscape with a café and restaurant scene that punches above its size, and the wider municipality is largely water. King Adolf Frederick renamed it after his wife Lovisa Ulrika following a visit in 1752, replacing the original name Degerby.
