Kourou

Home to the Guiana Space Centre — the main launch facility for both France and the European Space Agency — Kourou is a coastal town in French Guiana with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants. The nearby Îles du Salut (Salvation Islands) were once part of a penal colony for France's most serious offenders, closed in 1946, and remain a draw for day trips from the town.
