A waterfront town in Värmland on the shores of Lake Vänern, Kristinehamn has a walkable centre with a good spread of cafés and restaurants. Historically it developed as Sweden's leading export harbour for bar iron and pig iron from the Bergslagen mining region, and in the 18th century the international market price for iron was set at the Vågmästaregården here. The town sits at the confluence of the Varnan and Lötälven rivers, where they empty into a bay of Lake Vänern.
