This town in northern Shan State with a compact centre holding a concentration of historic churches, cafés, and restaurants, Kyaukme sits on the Mandalay–Lashio road and railway line, with mountain views and water nearby. Its name derives from a Shan phrase meaning "black rock," referring to a dark ridge close to town. The surrounding area connects to Mogok's ruby mines and the Shweli River valley.
