A modest commercial hub on the western bank of the Chanchamayo River in Peru's Junín Region, La Merced sits at the edge of the central jungle, with waterfalls, rivers, and wildlife-rich forest in the surrounding area. Founded in 1869 by Colonel José Manuel Pereira, the city serves as the provincial capital and an agricultural trading centre, with a central core of cafés and restaurants. The region was historically home to Asháninka, Piro, and Amuesha peoples.
