Founded in 1891 by Austrian and Germanic settlers from nearby Pozuzo, Oxapampa is a tiny Peruvian high-jungle town in the Pasco Region whose Tyrolean architecture and Germanic-flavored festivals set it apart from the surrounding Andes. The town sits along the Huancabamba River valley, with coffee and cattle farming shaping the local economy. Highway improvements since the 1980s have made it increasingly accessible, and it supports a café and restaurant scene that holds a surprising number of options for its size.
