Every four years, Landshut stages the Landshuter Hochzeit, a large-scale re-enactment of the 1475 wedding of Bavarian Duke Georg the Rich to Polish princess Hedwig, complete with knights' tournaments — first performed in 1903 and now the event the Bavarian town on the River Isar is best known for. Beyond the spectacle, Landshut's Gothic and Renaissance old town is among the best-preserved historic centres in Germany, with the brick tower of St. Martin's Church rising as the tallest brick church tower in the world, and the Stadtresidenz counted among the earliest Renaissance buildings north of the Alps.
