Le Grau-du-Roi

Gard · France

The only commune in the Gard department with a Mediterranean coastline, Le Grau-du-Roi is a small southern French town with a real café and restaurant scene, two protected beaches, and the large natural reserve of the Espiguette peninsula to the east. The shallow saltwater marshes just inland are home to flamingoes and separate the town from the medieval walled city of Aigues-Mortes. Two historic lighthouses — including the Espiguette lighthouse, listed as a monument historique — anchor the town's architectural heritage, and traditional Camargue events, including the abrivado and bandido, take place during the annual festival.
