Leonessa
Rieti · Italy
Founded in 1278 at the foot of Monte Terminillo in the northeastern corner of Lazio's Rieti province, Leonessa is a little town with an outsized number of historic churches and the birthplace of St. Giuseppe di Leonessa. In winter it serves as a base for the Terminillo ski slopes; in summer it draws visitors for cultural tourism. The town also carries a sombre wartime history: a 1944 German reprisal killed 51 inhabitants, commemorated by a monument erected in 1959.
