This south-coast Sicilian port town at the mouth of the Salso River, Licata has a compact centre with a concentration of historic churches, cafés, and restaurants, and a series of pocket beaches to the west separated by wave-cut headlands. Once the largest European exporting centre for sulphur, it retains a working port character alongside its ancient Greek origins — it is said to be the last Greek colony founded in Sicily. UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
