Turnu Măgurele, a city in Romania's Teleorman County, sits near the confluence of the Olt River and the Danube at the edge of the Wallachian Plain. First documented in 1394, it spent much of the following four centuries as an Ottoman fortress before becoming part of Wallachia after the Treaty of Adrianople in 1829. The city was later reshaped by communist-era industrialisation, centred on a chemical fertiliser plant built in 1962, and has since seen significant population decline.
