Danube port town in southern Romania, Zimnicea sits at the country's southernmost point opposite the Bulgarian city of Svishtov, with vineyards in the surrounding area. A Geto-Dacian fortress from the 4th century BC lies just west of town, and the settlement itself is first documented in 1385. Nearby wetlands at Balta Suhaia and Ostrovul Gâsca are protected natural areas. The 1977 earthquake was officially reported to have destroyed much of the town, though those accounts were later disputed.
