Mahiyangana
Sri Lanka
Mahiyangana, a town on the Mahaweli River in Sri Lanka's Uva Province, holds one of the country's most sacred Buddhist sites: the Mahiyangana Stupa, said to enshrine a hair relic of the Gautama Buddha from his first visit to Sri Lanka. Tradition holds that the original golden chethiya was built by Sumana Saman after the Buddha visited to settle a dispute between local tribes, with later structures added over centuries, the last by King Dutugemunu.
