A town on the banks of the Mahaweli Ganga in Sri Lanka's Kandy District, Nawalapitiya developed as a British colonial centre of coffee production and is the birthplace of M. G. Ramachandran, the Tamil cinema actor who later became chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
