Ratnapura — whose name translates as "City of Gems" — has been the centre of Sri Lanka's precious stone trade for centuries, with rubies, sapphires, and other gems mined from the surrounding area. The town sits on the Kalu Ganga (Black River) in south-central Sri Lanka, southeast of Colombo, and is a base for visiting nearby Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Udawalawe National Park, and Adam's Peak. Tea and rubber plantations extend across the surrounding landscape.
