Kalutara
Sri Lanka
This coastal town in Sri Lanka's Western Province where the Kalu Ganga river meets the sea, Kalutara sits a short drive south of Colombo and is known for coconut-fibre crafts — rope, baskets, and woven goods — and for mangosteens, a fruit introduced from Malaysia in the 19th century. The town has a concentration of historic churches in its centre and a colonial past involving Portuguese, Dutch, and British fortifications. Kalutara bridge, near the river mouth, was Sri Lanka's first concrete bridge.
