Modest Danish market town on the southern shore of Mariager Fjord in North Jutland, Mariager grew up around a Birgittine convent in the early 15th century and received town rights in 1592. Its name means "Mary's Field," after the Virgin Mary who gave her name to the original monastery. Today the town retains cobbled streets and timber-framed houses, a harbour with a protected swing crane, a salt museum with a mine and a bathing salt lake, and a summer passenger boat service along the fjord. The whitewashed 15th-century convent church rises prominently above the rooftops on a hillside.
