Montella
Avellino · Italy
Small mountain town in Campania's Avellino province, Montella sits within the Monti Picentini regional park and is known for its IGP-certified chestnuts and black truffles. The Calore Irpino river rises from a spring on Monte Accellica within the municipality. The town's Franciscan convent of San Francesco a Folloni holds the only known surviving original giornea — a medieval garment from the funeral vestments of Count Diego I Cavaniglia, who died at the 1481 Battle of Otranto. Settled since the Neolithic period, Montella was later founded by the Samnites and became a Lombard county seat.
