One of the largest surviving medieval city centres in Germany, Mühlhausen is a Thuringian town on the Unstrut river with eleven Gothic churches, a nearly complete medieval fortification, and a dense concentration of patrician houses within its old walls. Johann Sebastian Bach served as organist here in 1707–08, Thomas Müntzer preached and was executed outside the city walls, and John A. Roebling — designer of the Brooklyn Bridge — was born here. In 2016 the town received the honorary title "Reformation City of Europe."
