Nanjo
Nanjo City · Japan
Coastal city on the southern tip of Okinawa Island, Nanjo sits where the land meets the sea and is scattered with ancient castle ruins — known locally as gusuku — that reflect the island's pre-modern history. Formed in 2006 from the merger of four communities, the city's economy centres on agriculture, including sugarcane and turmeric, the latter processed here into teas and supplements. UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
