Okinawan city spread across the Katsuren Peninsula and eight offshore islands, Uruma is connected to those islands by the Mid-Sea Road, a causeway crossing open ocean that has become a symbol of the city. Multiple castles — including Katsuren, Agena, and Iha — dot the landscape alongside sites sacred to Ryukyuan religion, and the city hosts Okinawa's largest bullfighting venue. Uruma also carries significant postwar history as the place where civil life in Okinawa began to be restored after the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.
