Nola
Napoli · Italy
Nola, in Campania's Metropolitan City of Naples, is the birthplace of the Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno and the setting for the Festa dei Gigli, an annual June procession recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2013. The town also claims to have introduced bells to Christian worship, and tradition holds that the Roman emperor Augustus died here. Alfonso Maria de' Liguori wrote the Christmas hymn "Tu scendi dalle stelle" in Nola in 1754. The historic centre sits on the plain between Mount Vesuvius and the Apennines.
