Founded in 1535, Olinda is one of Brazil's best-preserved colonial cities, with its historic centre — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982 — dense with baroque churches, convents, and cobbled streets lined with artists' studios, bars, and restaurants. The city sits on the Atlantic coast just outside Recife and is known for one of Brazil's most celebrated carnivals: a free, open-street festival with African-influenced music and dance rooted in Portuguese tradition.
