Oosterbeek, a pocket-sized town just west of Arnhem in Gelderland, is known internationally for its role in the September 1944 Battle of Arnhem during Operation Market Garden. The Airborne Museum, housed in the former Hotel Hartenstein where British General Roy Urquhart had his wartime headquarters, commemorates the battle, and the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery lies on the northern edge of town. The village's Hervormde Kerk contains architectural sections dating to the second half of the 10th century, making it the oldest church in the Netherlands still in use. Oosterbeek is also where the Bilderberg Group first convened, in 1954, and is considered the birthplace of Dutch Impressionism. An annual walking event each September draws visitors from around the world to mark the Airborne commemorations.
