Peñafiel
Valladolid · Spain
Peñafiel Castle, visible from miles around and now housing the Wine Museum of Valladolid, crowns this pocket-sized Castilian town at the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region. Below the castle, the hillside is honeycombed with excavated wine caves whose chimney vents dot the landscape. The medieval Plaza del Coso, surrounded by private homes whose windows and balconies are auctioned to spectators during bullfights, adds a further layer of history. Guided winery visits in the surrounding Ribera del Duero are a growing draw.
