A compact town in southern Serbia with a café and restaurant scene concentrated in its centre, Prokuplje sits on the Toplica river in mountain terrain. One of Serbia's Roman-era sites, it was settled by South Slavs in the 6th century, passed through Ottoman rule — when it was known as Ürgüp — and joined the Kingdom of Serbia in 1878.
